Chafee’s folly

by Isaiah Webster III

CHAFEELincoln Chafee’s bizarre decision to seek the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination is Exhibit A  — proof that we’re in a stage where all sorts of foolishness passes as actual news. As late as 2006, Chafee was a Republican. As an independent governor of Rhode Island in 2013, he became a Democrat — hoping that doing so would improve his horrible approval ratings. It didn’t. Chafee was so weak in his state that he didn’t even bother running for re-election in 2014. Now, in April 2015, he has proclaimed that Hillary Clinton is unfit for the presidency because she voted to authorize the Iraq war in 2002. And on this basis alone, he contends that Democrats should make him their presidential nominee in 2016.

The assertions made by Gov. Chafee are so absurd that they barely warrant a response. It’s not even clear that Chafee would be competitive with Clinton in Rhode Island! And since Chafee has to know he has zero chance of actually gaining any traction in the Democratic primaries, a sane observer might wonder what’s the point of this? That remains unclear. Aside from his presence and critiques being a general nuisance — it’s also just plain sad to watch a man of high integrity lose it right in front of you. No matter what happens with Hillary, you can rest assured that to succeed Barack Obama, Democrats won’t nominate some old, boring White guy — who used to be a Republican!
